Alejandro Pelfini

Alejandro Pelfini holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Freiburg, Germany, and a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Salvador, Argentina. He serves as the Director of Postgraduate Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Salvador in Buenos Aires. He is also a researcher at FLACSO-Argentina, where he previously directed the Latin American Module of the Global Studies Programme from 2008 to 2020. Previously, he was a faculty member in the Department of Sociology at the Alberto Hurtado University in Santiago, Chile, and served as its director from August 2010 to March 2012. He has worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Sociology at the University of Freiburg (in the area of ‘Global Institutions and European Culture’), the Institute of Sciences at the National University of General Sarmiento in Argentina, and the Environmental Development Department at the University of Belgrano, Argentina.

His research interests encompass collective learning, environment-society relationships, and studies on elites and globalization. He has edited several collective books and authored various articles in regional and international journals. Among his recent publications are ‘¿Son o se hacen? Las élites empresariales chilenas ante el cuestionamiento ciudadano’ (Santiago de Chile: Ediciones Universidad Alberto Hurtado, 2022) and the author of ‘Elites. Emerging Societies and Responses to Inequality’ in Jodhka, S. & Rehbein, B. (Eds.) ‘Global Handbook of Inequality’ (Springer, 2023). He led a FONDECYT project in Chile on ‘The Transformation of Elites in an Emerging Society: Distinction, Tolerance, and Transnationalization of Business Elites in Chile.’
