Global Studies Programme
The Global Studies Programme is developed in partnership with the University of Freiburg and Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany. It is structured around an International Master’s program involving six universities from different countries: the University of Freiburg and Humboldt University of Berlin (Germany); the University of Cape Town (South Africa); Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi (India); Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok (Thailand); and FLACSO (Argentina). In addition, the programme extends through a range of research initiatives and publications addressing contemporary global issues. Its central focus is on the profound transformations of the world system and societies worldwide, and the challenges these changes pose for the social sciences and public debate.
Within the Global Studies Programme, globalization is not approached as an autonomous or natural phenomenon, nor is it limited to weighing its positive and negative effects. Rather, it is understood as a context in which a multitude of forces, meanings, and institutions interact to create a complex reality. As an academic programme, it seeks to develop analytical skills that enable effective engagement within this context—whether as social scientists, decision-makers in public or private management, advocates for civil society, or communicators.
The programme’s international composition and the mobility between its different locations make globalization much more than an object of study: it becomes a lived experience. This facilitates the translation of curricular content into practical competencies required to act effectively in this environment, fostering the development of what may be described as “global capital.” This is reflected in the programme’s structure, which is characterized by:
- Mobility: the ability to relocate with ease across diverse and distant contexts.
- Connectivity: openness to dialogue and real-time information exchange.
- Cosmopolitanism: sensitivity and tolerance toward different ways of life.
- Multilingualism: while English is the language of instruction, proficiency in Spanish is a significant asset. Optional German courses are offered to support students during the two semesters spent in Freiburg and Berlin.
